FOCUS AREA: MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS

MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENT FATALITY STATISTICS

The most recent data from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicates:

  • In 2003, almost 4,000 motorcyclists were killed on the roads and highways of the United States.  That represents an increase of almost 11% over the previous year.
  • The biggest percentage rise in the number of motorcycle deaths is in the under 20 and over 50 groups.
  • 67,000 people were injured in motorcycle accidents in 2003
  • 70% of all motorcycle accidents occur in and around intersections
  • Obscured visibility, defects, road hazards, weather, and lack of driver attention are the most significant contributing factors to motorcycle accidents.
  • Motorcyclists represent 8% of all road fatalities, even though they are only 2% of all drivers on the road.

Since July 1, 2000, Florida statutes have required motorcycle riders younger than 21 years of age to wear helmets. Adult motorcycle and moped riders are exempted provided they have insurance for motorcycle accident injuries with minimum medical benefit coverage of $10 000. Before July 1, 2000, Florida had a helmet law that required all riders to wear safety helmets.

The State of Florida is of interest because it accounts for 9% of all motorcycle rider deaths in the United States. Coinciding with the helmet law change, the number of Florida’s motorcycle registrations increased substantially. During the year 2000, Florida motorcyclist deaths increased by 45.5%, motorcycle registrations by 8.1%.
